Health System

Beginning in 2011, 3Dhealth partnered with a top 30 not-for-profit health system operating across two states in the Midwest. The health system has 26 hospitals, 500+ sites of care, over 10k physicians and $12 billion in revenue.

Situation

The health system operates in very diverse market types, from urban to suburban to rural. The health system has 1.3 million value-based lives, is one of the nation’s largest Accountable Care Organizations and has realized $280 million in taxpayer savings through the Medicare Shared Savings Program. The system had over 725,000 virtual visits in 2020 along with over 525,000 downloads of its patient app.

Outcome

Our thoughtful work ended up capturing market opportunities for growing physician market share, with proposed additions 412 physicians over the coming three years. By identifying and addressing physician referral leakage from the system, we helped add over $225 million in revenue. All in all, our data models projected that we grew the overall profitability of the system by more than $642 million.

National For-Profit Health System

In 2004, one of the largest for-profit health systems in the United States chose 3Dhealth as an exclusive partner after a national search to help bolster its compliance around financially assisting physicians with recruitment. The system includes 60 acute care hospitals as well as 460 outpatient centers and additional sites of care. The system also boasts 5,000 physician partners, over 100,000 employees and 8.6 million patient encounters.

Situation

Our objective charge for the health system was straightforward: develop a comprehensive approach and methodology to document whether a community need exists on a per physician recruit basis, and ensure the approach is more compliant than anyone else in the industry. We collaborated with our partner to develop just that – a detail-oriented approach that determines whether or not a community need exists in each physician specialty for their 60 hospitals and 25 ambulatory surgery centers (“ASCs”).ob

Outcome

As a result of our continued work, the health system has been able to define the CMS service area on an annual basis for each of its hospitals and ASCs, determine the demand for physicians across its CMS service areas, and calculate whether there is a surplus or deficit of market physicians in any CMS service area.

Multinational Catholic Health System

For over 17 years, 3Dhealth has been the laser focused partner for a Catholic not-for-profit system made up of 35 hospitals, more than 600 health centers and $5.7 billion in revenue. It is a top 25 system that includes more than 15,000 physicians, 45,000 employees and a large Accountable Care Organization.

Situation

The health system serves competitive suburban and rural markets in the South and Southwest. Over the last decade, the health system has expanded its mission to include facilities in Chile, Colombia and Mexico. The health system believes that its expansion in key Latin American countries provides the opportunity to utilize its business and clinical expertise, and infrastructure to quickly improve the access and affordability of healthcare in Latin America.

Outcome

Problem solving with this partner has enabled them to standardize their Provider Development Planning across the entire health system to make planning cycles consistent. By moving away from a hospital-based planning approach to population health, we helped develop 3-year recruitment targets supported by the health system and local operators within the ministries to more efficiently serve their communities.

Public Health System

For over a decade, 3Dhealth has partnered with one of the largest public health systems in the United States. The health system is anchored by four acute care hospitals, a rehabilitation hospital, a children’s hospital, a cancer center, and numerous outpatient centers and physician clinics. They have more than 2,200 members of their medical staff and employ over 750 primary care and specialty physicians in over 80 practice locations, resulting in more than 1.5 million patient contacts per year.

Situation

The health system operates within a mostly suburban market housing over 1.4 million people. Based on our most recent work with the system, 3Dhealth identified an opportunity for 260+ providers over the coming three years. Over half of the need is based on succession planning, followed by primary care growth and current gaps in specialists.

Outcome

As a result of the Provider Development Planning with us, the health system is expected to grow its primary care patient base by over 25%, increase its OB/Gyn patient base by 6% and pediatrics by 8% all over the next three years.

Community Hospital

3Dhealth recently completed a Provider Development Plan for one of our partner Chief Medical Officers who moved from the largest non-urban hospital in the U.S. to a 125-bed facility, certified Level III trauma center out West. Our new partner serves a market of around 300,000 people and is a mix of resort towns and rural ranches.

Situation

The market is projected to continue growing rapidly and is extremely competitive, with large health systems attempting to plant outposts.  About half of the local population lives within our partner’s primary market, with the other half living in the secondary market.

Based on our expert with the hospital, 3Dhealth identified an opportunity for 22 providers over the coming three years. The need is split evenly between filling current gaps in specialty care, succession planning and growth.

Outcome

As a result of Provider Development Planning with 3Dhealth, the hospital is expected to grow its patient base in primary care by 15%, increase its OB/Gyn patient base by 5% and pediatrics by 19% in the next three years.

Rural Hospital

Since 2016, 3Dhealth has partnered with a critical access hospital in an isolated rural market out west to complete Provider Development Planning. The hospital’s primary market includes around 45,000 residents and is projected to grow by 1% per year. The hospital and associated nursing home are the only two in the county.

Situation

The market deficits within primary care are quite small, which is unusual for a rural market. The market shortages within the medical and surgical subspecialties are much more pronounced, providing an opportunity for a data-driven approach to growth. Based on our most recent work with the hospital, 3Dhealth identified an opportunity for ten providers over the coming three years. 

Outcome
